Monday 22 September - First day at UCSB

Finally after settling our home for the past 4 weeks, fixing up Samuel's teeth after multiple dentist visits and a great trip to San Francisco, I attended my first day as a student at UCSB. I'm called a PhD candidate student - so until I have handed in a PhD proposal I am just a likely candidate.

I headed out from out family apartment on my trusty GT mountain bike at 8:30AM and was greeted with fresh morning Santa Barbara fog. After a 12 minute invigorating ride on University bicycle paths

Wednesday 20 August 2008: The Johnsons, a big truck and Santa Barbara

The day started in Dakar - Senegal at midnight and ended 31 hours later at 9:00PM at our stop over hotel in Santa Barbara. Here's what happened in-between ...

We arrived in Washington DC at 6:40AM and everything seemed fine until the immigration officer stamped a large letter "B" on my entry card in my VISA. I thought this simply meant they might surch my suitcases at customs but it ended up being a full interrogation in a special seperate room in the airport. Looking around me, I noticed that it was mostly people who were bearded or who wore full head coverings.
